Repressione preventiva al vertice NATO in Romania

Massive Repression during the NATO Summit in Romania

One day before the start of the Nato summit in Bucharest the situation gets worse. Hourly alternative looking people are detained by the police for no reason. Afterwards the police construct absurd offence, for example carrying a pocketknife amounting to possession a weapon. Every person coming to or leaving the convergence center is in danger of getting detained (some simply for walking to a nearby shop). The detained are interrogated, photographed and fingerprinted in police stations, and held for up to 24 hours.
At the Romanian border several groups of activists, as well as others, have been denied entry into the country.

The most involved Romanian activists around the country have at this point been visited or called by either the local police or SRI (Romanian information service) to be warned against participating in any anti-nato protests or to have their families intimidated.

27000 police officers, military, snipers and secret police are occupying the city. The security alert code yellow has been announced, meaning that all demonstrations are forbidden in the whole city amongst other restrictive laws.

In the face of this repression the actions of the few activists present are severely limited. Therefore we urgently need your solidarity. Please make solidarity actions in your cities.

Update 1
The factory rented to be used like a meeting place for the anti-nato activists was attacked by Romanian riot police and from 50 people 30 were arrested ….

Update 2
We saw what is happening in Bucharest on TV. Riot police don’t let journalist to go inside. In this situation we are afraid that the secret police will try to implant some “evidence”.

Update 3
Now the police try to accuse our friends of being violent because they tried to attacked the bodyguard of the factory , because he didnt want to let them in. Apparently the bodyguard call the police...Its evident that they try to make some serious accusation against them...

Update 4
46 from 50 were arrested till now...we saw on tv 2 who were free and talk with the press

Da Indymedia Romania:
The access to the Projectile event in Bucharest is for the moment denied.
event is taking place forbids the access , even though the place was rented, legally .The whole area is surrounded by the Police and journalists.
In the morning, someone tried to get out of the building and immediately he got surrounded by the police men. The person went back in the building to avoid getting arrested.
The site which was giving information about the summit (www.contra-doxa.com) is inaccessible since yesterday.
From the latest news, 50 anti-NATO activists got evacuated and detained, the police violently entered the place where people were having discussions considering militarization and war.
Once again, Romania is showing her totalitarian face.
Any kind of solidarity is welcomed.
TAKE ACTION; SPREAD THE WORD,FIGHT THE CAPITALIST WAR!
SMASH N.A.T.O.!

Update 5:
Bucharest police said that the people were arrested because they started a fight with the bodyguard an the owner of the factory which they rented. Those two didnt let a car to go inside because of the "inflammable materials". Its about paint for banners. Anyway the police sand there the special trained officers to search for explosives.
So we are still afraid about what they are trying to accuse our friends..

Update 6
46 persons were arrested, they were severally beaten in the way to .the
police stations and they were also under death treat. On guy from Iasi
(Gheorghe) was hospitalized and he was beaten even in the hospital.
Another girl ask the police to go to the hospital...Small protest was
organized in the front of the police station 11.

[traduzione] Assaltato il covergence center

Aggiornamento 1:

Aggiornamento 6
46 persone sono state arrestate.

Giornalista rumeno arrestato/ Police Officers Detain Journalist

Razvan Martin, program coordinator within the Press Monitoring Agency was detained on Wednesday by police officers and taken to precinct 10 in capital city Bucharest. “Martin is inside his car and a police officer is driving it. They are being escorted by another car to the tenth precinct. Nobody told him he is officially detained, but he is not free either. A free man would be driving his own car,” Mircea Toma, the Agency’s head, told Mediafax.

He said he will go to the station to see what is going on.

Martin told Mediafax reporters by phone that he was in a car together with five other people and stopped to ask directions on how to get to precinct no. 11. Martin intended to get to the station so that he may help the people that had been taken into custody from the Timpuri Noi Factory. His colleague Liliana Ganea was already there.

“When I stopped and asked the police officers how to reach the station they said they would drive us there, after which they got in the car, one of them behind the wheel, and took off. On the way, they told us we are actually heading towards police station no. 10 and that we cannot stop the car to get down,” Martin said.

The agency is part of the organization Reporters sans frontières (Reporters Without Borders).

However, quaestor Marian Tutilescu, head of the Romanian Police Forces said that Martin was not detained. He said Martin was only escorted to the precinct, as well as all other people in that area, for investigations.

The latest news says Martin was released from custody.

Arrestati attivisti rumeni e molti internazionali

The anti-NATO protesters detained for questioning in Bucharest on Wednesday were nationals of Germany, Romania, Moldova, Portugal, Spain and Poland, Bucharest police chief Marian Tutilescu said in a press conference. He said the bulk of the 54 protesters were Romanian and German nationals – 26 and 22 citizens, respectively.

The 17 women in the group were allowed to leave shortly after they were brought in for questioning at a police precinct in Bucharest, Tutilescu mentioned.

Several gendarmerie squads moved in a local plant on Wednesday afternoon and evacuated some 54 anti-NATO protesters who leased a production hall for the NATO summit, after several officers reported an incident between protesters and two officials with the plant.

The protesters were taken to several police precincts for questioning.

Save the assailants of the plant’s general manager and of a security guard, all the protesters will be released once the identification procedure is over, Tutilescu said.

“The other persons will be released immediately, with no other contraventions considered or any of their materials being confiscated, provided they have no nationalist or illegal characteristics,” Tutilescu said.

The chief of police said the intervention at the plant was conducted exclusively by gendarmes and that he cannot give any details about the actual operation.

Asked about one of the women in the group who was taken to a hospital, Tutilescu said the woman has twisted her ankle while getting in a gendarmerie car.
